UAE bemoans 'ugly' side of war after Yemen bus attack

United States bomb pieces found at Yemen bus strike site as Pentagon says "we may never know" who supplied it A Raytheon Mark 82 general-purpose free-fall bomb was likely used by the Saudi-led coalition to strike a bus full of children in Yemen on Thursday, a local journalist claims, after bomb fragments from the scene were recovered.

Yemen has been wracked by conflict since 2014, when Shia Houthi rebels overran much of the country.

The children died when a bus bringing them back from a picnic at a cemetery near the town of Dahyan was struck by a missile on Thursday.

Images sent to Al-Jazeera by Yemen's Houthi rebels suggest that Mark-82 bomb-which is manufactured by the massive American military contractor Raytheon-was used in the strike, though the photos have yet to be independently verified.

Anwar Gargash, the UAE's minister of state for foreign affairs, bemoaned the "ugly" side of war and played up the coalition's own probe into the strike.

On the humanitarian level, he stressed that the Saudi leadership, headed by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has donated $60 million a month to ease the suffering of the Yemeni people.

The Houthi-run al-Masirah TV on Monday quoted a health official as saying another child had died from his wounds, raising the toll to 52.

The United States and other Western powers provide arms and intelligence to the alliance, and human rights groups have criticised them over coalition air strikes that have killed hundreds of civilians at hospitals, schools and markets.

On Sunday, Mattis told reporters traveling with him to Brazil that he had "dispatched a three-star general into Riyadh to look into what happened here and if there is anything we can do to preclude this from the future".

Mattis' statement echoed what State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said last week when she called for the coalition to conduct "a thorough and transparent investigation".

Maliki stressed that the joint forces command will continue to combat terrorist groups in Yemen, accusing the Houthis of continuing to fire ballistic missiles against civilians in violation of worldwide and humanitarian laws.

The U.N. special envoy to Yemen has been shuttling between the warring parties ahead of holding consultations in Geneva on September 6 to try to end the conflict that has killed more than 10,000 people and pushed the impoverished Arab country to the verge of starvation, according to the United Nations.

"In this war we have seen civilians shot at, bombed, killed and, unfortunately, this is really part of any confrontation", he said in Dubai.
