Venezuelan leaders in Miami warn of attacks by Maduro against opposition

The president later described the attack, which injured seven soldiers, as an assassination attempt. "There is no doubt about the origin of these attacks coming from a Miami-Bogota-Caracas axis", he said in a foreign minister.

"If the government of Venezuela has hard information that they want to present to us that would show a potential violation of USA criminal law, we'll take a serious look at it", he said.

Arreaza thanked the solidarity shown by various governments and organizations in rejection of the attack against the president.

Maduro was unharmed after an exploding drone "attack", the minister of communication Jorge Rodriguez said following the incident.

The alleged attack involved two drones, each carrying a kilogramme of plastic explosive C4, which Reverol said on state television is "capable of causing effective damage over a 50-metre radius". They were piloted aircraft remotely and designed for industrial work and can withstand heavy loads.

Venezuela, a once-wealthy oil-producing nation, is in the midst of a five-year crisis under Maduro's socialist government.

He said one of the drones flew over the tribune where Maduro was giving a speech to mark a military parade but that it became "disoriented by signal inhibiting equipment" and was thus "activated outside the assassins' planned perimeter".

State television footage of the rally showed Maduro startled by what appeared to be an explosion and footage later panned to soldiers lined up on a boulevard who chaotically broke ranks in what appeared to be a reaction to a second blast.

The Colombian government has denied any involvement, saying there is "no basis" to Mr Maduro's allegations. The broadcast was quickly cut.

Dozens of soldiers are also seen scattering during the live event which was aimed at commentating the 81st anniversary of the Venezuelan National Guard in the capital of Caracas.

"I hope the Trump administration is willing to fight terrorist groups that commit attacks in peaceful countries in our continent, in this case Venezuela".

Reverol said security disabled one drone that was headed toward the stage where Maduro was speaking, while another crashed into a nearby building and exploded.

USA national security advisor John Bolton insisted Sunday that there was "no U.S. government involvement" and even suggested on "Fox News Sunday" that the incident could have been "a pretext set up by the regime itself". Maduro has steadily moved to concentrate power as the nation reels from a crippling economic crisis.

Opposition critics accuse Maduro of fabricating or exaggerating security incidents to distract from hyperinflation and Soviet-style product shortages.

Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have fled the country, where food and medicine are in very short supply, and where inflation this year could reach as high as one million percent according to the International Monetary Fund.

"We are in the midst of a wave of civil war in Venezuela", Saab said.
