Wildfire uncovers hidden Second World War-era landmark

It was one of many made with stones to tell World War Two planes they were above Ireland.

The (frankly unreasonably) hot weather has already turned up new historical revelations in the United Kingdom and Ireland dating from as far back as the Iron Age, but this week a gorse fire in County Wicklow, Ireland, has revealed something altogether more modern: a message from the Second World War, carved into the land itself.

The gorse fire has been burning in the area for the past three weeks, but the sign was only revealed when the smoke cleared.

Although there are plenty of the signs still around in the country, this one had been masked for decades by overgrowth.

Numerous signs, which were carved into headlands for both Allied and German pilots, are still visible and have been restored by volunteers in recent years.

It is thought the modern Irish word evolved from the old word Eriu, which was the name of a Gaelic goddess.

The historic find was snapped by a Garda Air Support Unit, who shared the images on Twitter via the Irish Air Corps.

A Gardai spokesman said: 'The signs themselves are quite common on the west coast but unusual on the east.

The Irish Air Corps says the Bray Head sign was No. 8.

There are over 80 of them spread around the country.

The Eire signs were also given lookout post numbers at the request of the US Air Force.
