Australian officials warn of needle danger for 6 strawberry brands

Australian officials warn of needle danger for 6 strawberry brands

The needles were discovered in three strawberries in a single punnet, which a customer had bought from Coles in Engadine in Sydney's south.

Police began looking into the potentially risky berries after a Facebook user on Saturday wrote that their friend took a bite of a strawberry and ate "half a sewing needle", according to the Palm Beach Post.

Other cases of strawberry contamination have so far been identified in NSW in Tweed Heads, Taree and Wingham, as well as in Queensland in the suburbs of Everton Park and the Redbank plains.

"For other brands, our advice is all strawberries should be cut up before they are eaten", Young said.

Coles has reportedly ordered a recall of all strawberry brands in NSW, while unaffected brands remain on Woolworths' shelves.

Coles issued a statement today saying it had already removed Donnybrook strawberries as requested by Queensland Health, but now it would remove all brands of Queensland grown strawberries for the time being.

Fruit sold under Berry Obsession, Berry Licious and Donnybrook brands have been affected, while NSW police warn fruit sold under the Love Berry, Delightful Strawberries and Oasis brands were inserted with needles by a possible copycat.

Queensland Health and the Queensland Police Service released information regarding the latest brand to fall victim to the sabotage on Friday afternoon and said two of the Donnybrook complaints were received on Thursday and another on Friday. "My ten year old found the first after biting into one and brought the rest to me", she told news.com.au.

News.com.au has contacted NSW Police for comment. I bought 2 punnets for my husband at Aldi just before I came into hospital.

"Sent my 7 year old to school with this brand strawberries this morning".

There have been concerns that copy cat could be replicating the previous incidents of sewing needles being hidden inside strawberry stocks from a Sunshine Coast-based supplier.

"It is a very, very broad picture and we can't speculate in any way, shape or form", said Terry Lawrence, Queensland acting chief superintendent.

The Warmuran farm that supplied the berries was inspected by Queensland Police and Australian Border Force officers yesterday.

"Until advised, consumers should cut up strawberries before consuming them", Queensland Health later said in a statement posted on Twitter.
