‘Danger to life is possible’: Alert issued ahead of Storm Helene’s arrival

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for.

Tropical Storm Isaac made its closest approach to St. Croix Thursday night, passing nearly 200 miles to the south and having no apparent impact on the territory as it made its leisurely way across the Caribbean.

On the forecast track, Isaac should move farther away from Lesser Antilles today, and then move across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea through the weekend. Earlier forecasts showed that the storm was slated to directly hit around North and SC.

Although Helene is now a hurricane, it will weaken and be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reaches the Azores.

Mapp, who spoke with the National Weather Service and Virgin Islands Emergency Management Agency officials again this morning, said two to four inches of rain are expected on St. Croix beginning Thursday evening.

Florence has 130 miles per hour winds, enough to make it a risky Category 4 hurricane. Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.

North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons (36 trillion litres), enough to cover the Tar Heel state to a depth of about 10 inches (25 centimetres).

Beyond that brief period, the cyclone should weaken a bit as it completes extratropical transition while passing just to the northwest of the Azores Islands and traversing much cooler waters.

Road and bridges may close, with fallen trees are expected.

The patch of gusty weather that's left is producing winds of up to 35 miles per hour as it drifts west at 16 mph. Airlines canceled more than 2,400 flights through Sunday.

In New Bern, population 29,000, flooding on the Neuse River trapped about 200 people.

The center of Isaac is forecast to pass 109 miles south of St. Croix at 2 a.m. on Friday.

"The wind was so hard, the waters were so hard ..." She was eventually rescued by a boat crew; 140 more awaited help.
