Dont play games with it: Florence takes aim at Carolinas

Many people in coastal communities have followed the mandatory evacuation orders, but some are vowing to stay put and ride it out.

Tropical storm force winds are thought to be just hours away from making landfall in North Carolina.

It's unclear exactly how many people evacuated, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out.

U.S. President Donald Trump both touted the government's readiness and urged people to get out of the way.

Ten years ago today, Hurricane Ike made landfall as "only" a Category 2 hurricane along Galveston Island near Houston.

In a word of warning for residents in the affected regions, Mr Parrish said: "I would like to tell them to listen to what their emergency services and hurricane centers have to say". Water kills more people in hurricanes than wind, and the rain and storm surge will make Florence extremely risky. It then will move near or over the coast of southern North Carolina and eastern SC in the hurricane warning area later Thursday and Friday. And an unusual combination of other weather systems that likely will stall Florence when it hits land, allowing it to sit for days and dump huge amounts of rain.

According to Wednesday morning's update from the National Hurricane Center, Florence could park off the coast of the Carolinas on Friday, bringing damaging winds and even extreme storm surges to coastal areas. As the storm moves inland, Georgia, Virginia, and Maryland will also be in peril.

At this height of the Atlantic hurricane season, Florence was being trailed on east-to-west paths by two other storms, Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Isaac, but neither packs the deadly punch of Florence.

"In 12 or 18 hours, they may be saying different things all over again", he said. "The biggest hazard that we're anxious about is storm surge", Long said.

Florence is so wide that a life-threatening storm surge was being pushed 300 miles ahead of its eye, and so wet that a swathe from SC to OH and Pennsylvania could get deluged.

"Our sand dunes are healthy but they're not going to be able to keep back a wall of water like that", he said. "Flooding is nearly guaranteed". "I mean this takes a long time to move through the Carolinas". One North Carolina woman packed flowers to leave on her son's grave.

The current forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls for more than 20 inches of rain where the storm makes landfall.

Astronaut Alexander Gerst captured this image of Hurricane Florence from the space station on September 12, 2018. "Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you".

Some Florence evacuees are steering toward Bristol Motor Speedway near the Tennessee-Virginia border and Atlanta Motor Speedway, where campgrounds have been opened for people fleeing the storm.

Hurricane Olivia is heading towards Hawaii as Tropical Storm Paul is approaching the west coast of Mexico. When Alexander Gerst and Ricky Arnold, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), attempted to photograph Hurricane Florence, the storm was so big they "could only capture her with a super wide-angle lens", according to Gerst.

"I am not convinced that climate change has an identifiable effect on speed or storm track".
