Florence turns deadly, unleashing 'catastrophic' floods on Carolinas

"Inland flooding kills a lot of people unfortunately and that's what we're about to see".

Right now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center is predicting that Florence will become a tropical storm tomorrow (Sept. 15) over SC, continue northwest to eastern Kentucky, then swing northeast and track over most of New England early next week. It has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, but is not going anywhere fast.

"The fact is this storm is deadly and we know we are days away from an ending", Cooper said.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com said Florence could dump a staggering 18 trillion gallons (68 trillion liters) of rain over a week on North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland.

Roberts, the city spokeswoman, said preliminary estimates show about 4,300 residences and 300 commercial buildings had been damaged.

But it was clear that this was really about the water, not the wind.

Hurricane Florence began lashing the coast Thursday morning, sending pounding waves ashore and rising storm surge. Eventually, a volunteer rescue team from IN arrived with a boat and rescued them. That, in turn, could trigger epic flooding well inland.

Authorities warned, too, of risks of mudslides and environmental disasters from floodwaters washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms.

Preparing for the worst, about 9,700 National Guard troops and civilians were deployed with high-water vehicles, helicopters and boats.
