Florence weakens, but 'disaster is at doorstep'

In South Carolina and inland parts of North Carolina, 5 to 10 inches of rain could fall, with 20 inches possible in some areas.

"We do not want to risk one SC life in this hurricane", the governor told reporters. The governor added that a million or more people could be evacuated before the storm makes landfall.

In Carolina Beach, authorities have stopped allowing traffic to the island via the only bridge between the island and the mainland. Over 1.5 million people are under evacuation orders. They also instituted a 24-hour curfew.

Flaherty said there is a small piece of good news, in that the "flow" in the southeastern quadrant of the storm has been reduced slightly.

"It's going to be bad", said Woody White, a county commissioner. "Flooding is nearly guaranteed". They warned that the storm could unleash catastrophic flooding from southern Virginia to southern Georgia and stretch hundreds of miles inland.

SC will not be evacuating Ridgeland Correctional Institution, even though it's in an area that could be hit by Hurricane Florence, the newspaper The State reports. She packed up what she could and took a ferry.

Hurricane Florence, growing in size despite its weakening winds, churned ever closer to the U.S. East Coast on Wednesday as evacuations expanded south from the Carolinas into Georgia to counter the threat of deadly high seas and calamitous floods.

Experts say the lagoons should be able to handle about 3 feet of rain, but hog farmers, who have been trying to pump manure out of the ponds and spray it on fields as fertilizer, aren't convinced.

"Hurricane Florence is looking even bigger than anticipated".

Hurricane conditions will likely hit on Friday, but tropical storm conditions will arrive on Thursday, according to the hurricane center. "Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you".

The videos reiterate how powerful and risky these storms can be.

Florence is headed straight for some of the most well-known military bases in the country. The shopping list for people who have chose to ride out the storm at home: plywood to board up their windows, sandbags, bilge pumps, generators, trash bags, potato chips, bottled water and wine.
