Ghana's flags fly at Half-mast as dignitaries attend Kofi Annan's funeral

The late Kofi Annan.

The current UN Secretary-General, Mr Antonio Guterres, led mourners from the diplomatic corps, while there were representatives of the African Union, the West African bloc Ecowas, and presidents from across Africa and beyond.

Many ordinary Ghanaians described him as a father-figure and a source of national pride, while his brother, Kobina, told the congregation that he was not just a leader and statesman.

She concluded the tribute by saying that "I am very lucky to have [had] such a man as my father".

He said the last time he saw Mr. Annan was in March 2018, when the former global diplomat came to "inform me, much to my discomfiture, that he could no longer continue to serve as Chancellor of Ghana's premier university, the University of Ghana, Legon, since he had served the two terms permitted by the statutes of the university".

The grandson of tribal chiefs, he was the first black African to become the United Nations leader and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

In his retirement, despite being at the forefront of diffusing volatile situations in Africa as a member of the Elders Club, his detractors have always blamed him for simply fiddling his fingers as the 1994 genocide in Rwanda raged.

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga will be among those attending Thursday's ceremony, his office said.

The 7th General Secretary of the United Nations, Kofi Annan will be buried in Accra today after three days of public viewing and mourning.

Kofi Annan's death was felt across the continent and the world at large.

"A man with a generous spirit, who gave himself to others, put himself at their disposal and was one of the most loving people", Ama said on Thursday at the memorial service for the late UN Secretary General in Accra.

Annan's body was flown to Accra on Monday, accompanied by his family, including Nane.

The Nobel peace laureate passed away on August 18 in the Swiss city of Berne, at the age of 80, after a short illness.

Mourners in traditional black and red attire filled the main hall of the Accra Conference Centre, where the funeral held.

Fritz Kitcher, who spent his career working in human rights for the United Nations in Geneva, said he had watched Annan rise through the ranks.

The king of Ghana's Asante people, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, awarded Annan the title Busumuru in 2012 to honour his role as an global diplomat.

She pledged to "keep the torch burning" on gender equality, an area where he showed great dedication.

"He moved every person, from shanty to palace, from impoverished streets to government enclaves, from a morning greeting from a member of the household, or a moment shared with a loved one, to negotiating worldwide peace", she said of her father.

"There are a lot of Ghanaians who can take on the mantle and do similar, like he did, but not like him because he is a unique individual".
