Google execs bemoan Trump election in 2016

Far-right news website Breitbart on Wednesday posted a leaked video showing Google executives sharing with employees how troubled they were by the election of US President Donald Trump.

Google, based in Mountain View, California, has consistently denied any political bias or consideration in developing the algorithms it uses for internet searches.

Sergey Brin can be seen holding a microphone and telling workers that he found the election "deeply offensive" and that "I know many of you do too".

In the hour of video footage, Brin is shown saying he is "deeply offend [ed]" by Trump's election due to his status as an immigrant, and added that Trump's politics conflict "with many of [Google's] values". "We kept our Google efforts non-partisan and followed our company's protocols for the elections strategy", read the email from Google's Eliana Murillo, sent November 9, 2016, according to Breitbart.

Trump's 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale, took to Twitter to voice his protest.

Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah, sent a letter to the Federal Substitute Price asking it to re-seek for Google's search and digital advertising practices, calling experiences of anticompetitive habits by the firm "disquieting."Silicon Valley giants are ideally qualified hasten to gain more scrutiny from Washington".

In a statement, Google said employees and executives in the all-hands meeting were expressing their personal views after a "long and divisive election season". Congressional lawmakers slammed the company for failing to send a top executive to testify at a hearing alongside Facebook and Twitter last week.

Kent Walker, a senior VP at Google, suggested that Trump supporters were motivated by "fear", including "xenophobia" and "hatred".

But they insisted that that nothing in the video suggested that a political bias had influenced the way Google builds or operates its products.

Google's Vice President Eileen Naughton said their leaders had encouraged their employees to understand "all sides of the political spectrum".

"To the contrary, our products are built for everyone, and we design them with extraordinary care to be a trustworthy source of information for everyone, without regard to political viewpoint", the statement concluded.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai also addressed the gathering, saying that while the election was rife with rhetoric and division, people should have faith in the democratic process. I have heard from some conservative Googlers in the past few days that they haven't felt comfortable. In the video Pichai says that YouTube plays a big role in the discussions about social media and acknowledged there "seems to be a selection bias" around how people are able to access information. "We need to do better".
