Hurricane Florence: Carolinas brace for 'storm of lifetime'

Hurricane Florence: Carolinas brace for 'storm of lifetime'

Storm surge, the rise in seawater above normally dry land at the coast, could rise a story high. It is poised to slow to a crawl there and then drift to the southwest, unloading disastrous amounts of rain. Coastal storm surge is expected to be as high as 13 feet, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Even worse: Florence is expected to hover over the Carolinas, whipping hurricane-force winds and dumping relentless rain at least through Saturday. These unforgiving winds will damage homes and buildings, down trees and knock out power.

A storm surge watch is in effect for Edisto Beach, SC, to South Santee River, SC, and for north of Duck, NC, to the North Carolina/Virginia border. "Once the storm moves further inland to Atlanta and Charlotte, the biggest issue will be rain and thunderstorms", she said. Some fluctuation in wind speeds are expected, and weakening forecast Thursday, but it's still expected to be a fierce storm triggering risky flooding.

Florence will bring large rainfall totals through Saturday in North Carolina, north SC and Virginia, causing catastrophic flash flooding.

At last report, the storm was about 180 kilometers east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina and about 270 kilometers east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Tropical Storm Isaac was expected to pass south of Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, while Hurricane Helene was moving northward away from land. Despite the fact that the hurricane has been downgraded to Category 2, the 80 miles per hour winds and coastal flooding will still cause significant damage throughout the southeast. A National Weather Service forecaster has said it will be the "storm of a lifetime" for parts of the Carolina coast.

The outer rain bands from Hurricane Florence have begun to come ashore in North Carolina.

Florence is becoming more of a threat to more people - now including some in Georgia - in more ways.

Like a bulldozer, the storm's winds and forward motion will push a tremendous amount of water onshore when it makes landfall.

Masters said there's a tug-of-war between two clear-skies high-pressure systems - one off the coast and one over MI. If you're anywhere near the affected regions or have loved ones in the deadly Category 2 storm's path, make sure to keep track of what government and other storm trackers are advising.

It's unclear exactly how many people fled, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out. As the storm moves inland, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland will also be in peril.

When flight operations can resume will depend on how long Florence sticks around, and forecasters predict it could sit and drench areas of the Carolinas with a deluge of rainwater over a couple of days.

The scale includes five categories and is based on the storm's sustained wind speeds. Restoring power to all customers could take weeks, the utility warned.

The company said as many as three-fourths of its 4 million customers in North Carolina and SC could lose power.

It's incredibly hard to pin down a storm's precise death toll because of the myriad, chaotic factors that accompany a natural disaster.

Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, said the politicians behind the North Carolina law are placing their constituents in harm's way.
