Hurricane Florence makes landfall, set to inundate Carolinas

The center said the waves were measured by satellite.

However, it's not too late to prepare for Hurricane Florence - or any other storm that may move through Coweta County.

The National Hurricane Center said the hurricane's peak winds have decreased slightly to 125 mph but the size of the wind field has increased to outwards of 70 miles from the center. It is expected to move across parts of southeastern North Carolina and eastern SC on Friday and Saturday, then head north over the western Carolinas and central Appalachian Mountains early next week, the NHC said.

Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane with 120 miles per hour winds on Thursday but dropped to Category 1 before coming ashore. "Everyone was sold out", she said.

Coastal streets in the Carolinas flowed with frothy ocean water, and at least 510,000 homes and businesses were without power, almost all of them in North Carolina, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks the nation's electrical grid.

Fierce winds and massive waves are expected to lash the coasts of North and SC and Virginia even before Florence makes landfall by early Friday, bringing a storm surge as much as 13 feet (4 meters). Despite its unpredictable path, it was forecast to make landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina, at midday on Friday.

A hurricane warning - meaning hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours - is in effect for a long stretch of the coast, from the Santee River in SC to Duck, N.C., which is part of the Outer Banks.

Hurricanes Katrina and Harvey, which decimated parts of the Gulf states and Texas in 2005 and 2017 respectively, cost more than $125 billion.

"The sun rose this morning on an extremely unsafe situation and it's going to get worse", he said at a news conference in Raleigh.

In addition, a high-pressure ridge that's parked over the East Coast is expected to prevent Florence from doing the typical swerve away from the Carolinas and also keep it stuck for multiple days once it reaches land.

Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC and Virginia, opening the way for federal aid.

NASA shared a new sobering view of Florence on Wednesday morning.

The Governor issued a state of emergency around noon on Wednesday ahead of the storm.

"Everyone who is staying here is either a real old timer, someone who doesn't know where would be better, or someone involved in emergency operations one way or another", said Fox.

"We expect it to approach the coast early Friday morning, begin to have hurricane force winds, storm surge, and catastrophic inland flooding", William Lapenta told Hill.TV's Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on "Rising".
