Hurricane Florence's catastrophic flooding is a sign of what's to come

Flash flood warnings are posted across North Carolina and the worst is yet to come.

Rescue crews used boats to reach more than 360 people stranded by rising waters in New Bern, North Carolina, while many of their neighbours awaited help.

WILMINGTON, United States (2nd UPDATE) - Tropical storm Florence caused "catastrophic" flooding in the Carolinas Saturday, September 15 even as it began to weaken, after resulting in multiple deaths, including a woman and her baby killed when a tree fell on their house.

"In addition to the ongoing, unsafe storm surge and flash flooding, will be a long-term river flood threat WELL INLAND as very heavy rainfall continues to fall in the coming days".

United States media later said a second man in Lenoir County died after heavy winds knocked him down as he tried to check on his dogs.

Though Florence's shrieking winds diminished from hurricane force as it came ashore, forecasters said the sheer size of the 350-mile-wide storm and its painfully slow progress across North and SC in the coming days could leave much of the region under water. A 78-year-old man was electrocuted attempting to connect extension cords while another man perished when he was blown down by high winds while checking on his hunting dogs, a county spokesman said.

The National Weather Service said on Twitter on Friday night that Morehead City had received 23.04 inches of rain with more heavy rain coming.

More than two feet of rain has bombarded the counties.

At 5 p.m., Florence was centered about 50 miles (75 kilometers) west-southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina, and about 25 miles (45 kilometers) northeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The hurricane center predicts as much as 101 centimeters (40 inches) of rain for some parts of North Carolina.

North Carolina utilities have estimated that as many as 2.5 million state residents could be left without power, the state's Department of Public Safety said.

"The president is expected to travel to areas affected by the storm early to middle of next week, once it is determined his travel will not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts".

More than 12,000 people were in shelters in North Carolina and 400 in Virginia, where the forecast was less dire.

Eudy and his family stayed home in New Bern partly to protect their house. By Friday evening, the eye of the storm had moved to SC.
