Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge smashes marathon world record in Berlin

Kenya's Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has set a sensational new world record on Sunday.

For a man that has been so superior to his contemporaries over the last few years in the marathon- he had won eight straight entering Sunday, and nine if you count the Breaking 2 event- Kipchoge wasn't afraid of setting a seemingly impossible pace.

"I had a great belief that I would run a World record but I dint know I would run 2:01".

Kipchoge, 33, is the reigning Olympic champion in the marathon and has run the fastest recorded time over 26.2 miles-a blistering 2 hours and 25 seconds- as part of a Nike-sponsored marketing event previous year that wasn't a ratified race.

Kipchoge revealed that he planned on crossing the half marathon mark in 61 minutes.

Ahead of the race, Kipchoge was more reserved about his expectations and told reporters that he was simply aiming to lower his personal best of 2:03:05.

Boosted after leaving Boit, he surged, running the 27th kilometre in just 2:51 - seven seconds faster than necessary.

The women's race was understandably overshadowed by Kipchoge's heroics, but 35-year-old Kenyan Gladys Cherono had herself a marvelous day in Berlin as well.

But even after the last one peeled off after 25-kilometres, Kipchoge showed no sign of slowing, passing the 30km mark in 1:26:45, with a pace of 2:52 per 1,000-metres. It was just a matter of how much time he could take off Kimetto's record.

Kipchoge now adds the official world record to his extensive list of achievements. "I didn't know that what I was believing translated to 2:01 but I'm happy for it".

He accelerated over the final two kilometres and with his eyes on the finishing line shone the crowd with his infectious smile, striding to cut the tape in a new record time, by a whooping one minute and 18 seconds. Past year he set the fastest ever time over the marathon distance on the Monza race track in Italy for Nike's Breaking2 project.

Kipchoge came agonizingly close to sporting immortality by almost running the first sub two-hour marathon past year. The celebration continued with Kipchoge taking pictures and embracing fans while the next runner would cross the finish line four minutes and 44 seconds later.

"I lack words to describe this day", said Kipchoge, a former world champion over 5,000 meters who also won a gold medal running the marathon for the Brazil Olympic Games in 2016.
