'Manchester United Star Developing Quicker Than Cristiano Ronaldo'

'Manchester United Star Developing Quicker Than Cristiano Ronaldo'

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has developed further as a player than Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane had when they were the same age, according to England manager Gareth Southgate.

Rashford is again struggling for game time at Old Trafford this season, but Southgate says his performances for England this week will boost his confidence when he returns to club duty under Jose Mourinho.

"It's not my business to interfere with club managers, they have a hard job to do and they have big squads at the top six, huge competition for places, so Jose thinks the world of Marcus", he said.

Rashford will have just a year left in his contract and former England defender Jamie Carragher has told him to quit rather than start from the bench.

That means he'll miss the next three domestic games for United, matches against Watford and Wolves in the league as well as the League Cup Third Round s Derby County.

Gareth Southgate has warned his England players that it will be hard to pick them for next month's Nations League games in Croatia and Spain if they are not playing regularly for their clubs.

"Jose thinks the world of Marcus", he said.

Southgate is confident that Rashford's spell away with England will have raised his morale, as he also netted in the 2-1 Nations League defeat against Spain on Saturday.

"The landscape is what it is and I understand the difficulties club managers have". He's a huge admirer of him, but he has got his job to do. "He's got huge competition for places at his club, so you can understand [his frustration]".

"One of the biggest concerns is playing time for English players - that is shown by a number of the squad who came with us in Russian Federation not getting opportunities", Southgate said in a press conference last month. They have to try and win matches.

"He would have been a bit disappointed about the amount of time he had at the World Cup but it was important to get him in the penalty box and remembering the areas where he needs to be scoring goals". They have to rotate their squads.
