Maryland Firefighters Depart for South Carolina Ahead of Hurricane Florence

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm was expected to hover along the southern edge of the North Carolina coast from Thursday night until making landfall Saturday morning. The slow-moving storm, with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, is expected. There are concerns that it could knock out power for weeks.

Florence, now a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (209 km/h), was previously expected to travel north, up the North Carolina coast, after making landfall, according to the statement.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, concerned the storm would bring devastation south, issued an emergency declaration for all 159 counties in his state.

"The state is mobilizing all available resources to ensure public safety", Deal said.

"I can't emphasize enough the potential for unbelievable damage from wind, storm surge, and inland flooding with this storm".

Faced with new forecasts that showed a more southerly threat, Georgia's governor joined his counterparts in Virginia and North and SC in declaring a state of emergency, and some residents who had thought they were safely out of range boarded up their homes.

In Virginia, where about 245,000 residents were ordered to evacuate low-lying areas, officials urged people to remain away from home despite forecast changes showing Florence's path largely missing the state.

A state of emergency has been declared in both North and SC.

To whip up a monstrous storm like the one chugging for the Carolinas you need a handful of ingredients - and Florence has them all.

This is the third time SC has had to cancel a game due to weather in the last four years.

Another joker said: 'Looks like tropical storm Floyd has penetrated Florence, we will be having a baby shower for the little sprinkle that's due in 9 months'. Amazon is already preparing to do what it can for those in the storm's path.

"We're just trying to plan for the future here, not having a house for an extended period of time", David Garrigus said.

If some of the computer projections hold, "it's going to come roaring up to the coast Thursday night and say, 'I'm not sure I really want to do this, and I'll just take a tour of the coast and decide where I want to go inland,"' said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the private Weather Underground forecasting service.

Hurricane florence is the most powerful storm to emerge from the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season. "Everyone was sold out", she said.
