MMA world reacts to Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin 2

Both fighters made the division limit of this world middleweight clash - 159.6lbs, with Alvarez tipping the scales at 159.4lbs with Golovkin two pounds heavier.

The first fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin past year was a great one, but everyone was left disappointed after it resulted in a draw.

"He's a great fighter but I'm a great fighter and I showed it tonight", Alvarez said after he claimed the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation belts.

Golovkin beat Vanes Martirosyan as a replacement opponent on May 5 at T-Mobile Arena.

The Mexican edged a frantic final round which helped sway the decision in his favour with the judges scoring a brutal and incident packed fight 114-114 115-113 115-113.

This carried on much the same in rounds eleven and twelve, with Canelo showing a granite chin to stand up to a hailstorm of Golovkin power shots.

David Lemieux of Canada set himself up for a possible title fight by stopping Ireland's Gary O'Sullivan with a crushing left hook at 2:44 of the first round in a middleweight clash.

In the 12th round, both fighters emptied their respective tanks, launching heavy blows and swinging wildly. Standing in the center in round four, Golovkin connected with a solid right that caught Canelo's attention. He was credited with landing 234 of 879 punches while Alvarez landed 203 of 622.

A year after the two fought to a draw, the second fight was nearly as close.

Since Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s retirement, boxing has been a sport without a transcendent superstar.

Olympic medallist and unbeaten professional boxer Michael Conlan reckons that Canelo deserved to win.

After Golovkin's poised jab clearly won the opening three minutes, Alvarez's response in the second - including a solid right uppercut - pointed to the back-and-forth contest that was to come. The extended wait didn't sit well with Golovkin.

Normally soft-spoken and subdued, the Kazakh fighter began lashing out at Alvarez, upset at the obstacles that needed clearing to make the rematch happen. He repeatedly called Alvarez a liar and a cheat, making no effort to hide the animosity that had built up over time.

Once again, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin's matchup was left up to the decision of the judges. He's a garbage talker and I'll shut him up on Saturday.

He claimed that the failed tests were a result of eating contaminated meat but the Nevada Athletic Commission imposed a backdated six-month suspension on the Mexican fighter.
