Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz dies in London

Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz dies in London

Kulsoom had contested and won the NA-120 seat, a traditional bastion of Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), after it fell vacant due to her husband's disqualification.

Up until her husband's ouster a year ago, Kulsoom Sharif had never been a politician, but she memorably led protests after the 1999 military coup that ended a previous Sharif administration.

The former premier and his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, had flown to London before Eid-ul-Fitr to tend to Begum Kulsoom, who was hospitalised at the time. He was sentenced to 10-year jail term by an anti-corruption court in Pakistan.

Her family was known for wrestling.

"Feeling so sorry for Maryam and Mian sahib (Nawaz Sharif)", tweeted one user, Mobeen Shafaat.

Both her sons Hassan and Hussain reside in the United Kingdom and cared for her while Nawaz and Maryam attended near daily hearings of the corruption trial.

Her political career and factual struggle started during the second tenure of Nawaz Sharif when his confrontation with the army establishment intensified.

She is survived by her husband and their four children.

Both mother and daughter were also placed under house arrest following Nawaz's dismissal by Musharraf.

She remained attached with her husband during his struggle against Pervez Musharraf and attended various public gatherings.

Others speculated on whether Khan's government would allow Sharif or his daughter to return to London to collect Nawaz's body.

The 68-year-old three-time former first lady was diagnosed with early-stage lymphoma in August last year and had been since then in London where she underwent multiple surgeries.

According to media reports, she had been put on life support and a ventilator earlier in the day.

During her illness, Kulsoom's two sons, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz, took care of her in London.

She managed to get away in a auto, which was chased by the police for several miles.
