Nintendo sets a start date for Switch online service

Memberships for Nintendo Switch Online begin on September 18, 2018, and users will be able to test out the service with a 7-day free trial via the Nintendo eShop. Today, Nintendo detailed the firmware update that's coming along with the Switch Online launch, and it's making some changes that Switch owners should definitely know about. These controllers are modeled after the original NES ones and can be attached to the Nintendo Switch console to be recharged just like the joycons.

The company sent out an email to all users Wednesday night with a reminder to ensure that all Switch profiles on all systems in the home are linked to the correct Nintendo Account, as going forward beyond Sep.

Pre-orders open on September 18.

The Nintendo Switch Online service will let subscribers play online multiplayer games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 online. We might hear about more games during the Nintendo Direct on Thursday.

This will be especially important if you have multiple Switch profiles in your house, such as those for children and other family members. You can make use of a seven-day free trial by signing up on the Nintendo eShop starting September 18.

The controllers work specifically with the NES games offered through the Online service, so don't expect to use them with, say, the Hamster Vs.
