Real Madrid 'join Frenkie de Jong race'

Tottenham and Barcelona are to go head to head over Ajax's Frenkie de Jong. De Jong can play as an interior midfielder or deeper and his versatility is valued by Barcelona. But the Ajax management made it clear that De Jong is not for sale.

The Catalan club were heavily interested in securing the services of the 21-year-old over the summer, having seen Atletico Madrid superstar Antoine Griezmann snub a move to Camp Nou.

Real Madrid are ready to challenge their bitter rivals Barcelona for the signature of 21-year-old Dutch professional footballer Frenkie De Jong who plays for Ajax.

"Barcelona can return in January if they want, but no player will leave", he is quoted as saying by AS.

Ajax are well known for developing some fantastic young players, and have proven that they are willing to sell their star players to Europe's elite once they receive a satisfactory offer. After returning to the Champions League group stage this season, the former European champions are determined to retain their squad as they try to reach the knockout phase.

De Jong has been linked with Tottenham and Barcelona, but Wijnaldum has urged him not to rush things.

De Jong made his global debut for Netherlands on Thursday in a friendly against Peru and then went on to feature in the UEFA Nations League encounter against France at the weekend.

"Maybe someday I'll join Barcelona, but not this season", he told NOS.

De Jong is under contract at Ajax until 2022, so any bid would have to be astronomical to be accepted.

He added: "He is doing very well now, but we have often had Dutch players who first played very well, but later became less".
