Storm response in Puerto Rico 'incredibly successful,' Trump says

And the problem with Puerto Rico is their electric grid and their electric-generating plant was dead before the storms ever hit.

"We're as ready as anybody's ever been", he told reporters at the White House.

But perhaps worst of all is the fact that Trump is using words like "tremendous" and "success" to describe a response to a storm that ultimately killed nearly 3,000 people, more than the roughly 1,800 killed by Hurricane Katrina and about the same number of people who were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

When asked about the US response to last year's devastating hurricanes Maria, Harvey, and Irma, Trump said they deserved an excellent grade.

At the time, the administration committed to a more aggressive response to storms that struck Texas, even as that situation there became more manageable and Puerto Rico desperately needed more assistance.

In a report issued earlier this month, the government's chief watchdog found that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had been overwhelmed by a series of devastating hurricanes and other disasters in 2017.

Most of the deaths blamed on Maria in Puerto Rico resulted not from the physical impact of the hurricane, but rather because of the shortcomings in preparedness and response - the lack of access to medical care; to dialysis treatment and diabetes medication, for example.

President Donald Trump is calling the US government's response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico "incredibly successful" even though a recent federal report found that almost 3,000 people died.

Hurricane Maria pummelled Puerto Rico in September 2017, wreaking widespread devastation and causing US$90 billion in damages.

"This is not going to be a storm we recover from in days", Byard said at FEMA's headquarters in Washington.

"These will be statewide events", Long said, urging residents of areas under evacuation orders to flee.

Ricardo Rosselló, the Governor of Puerto Rico, responded on Tuesday night saying "no relationship between a colony and the federal government can ever be called a success".
