'Supergirl' to Be DC's New Focus as Henry Cavill Exits 'Superman'

'Supergirl' to Be DC's New Focus as Henry Cavill Exits 'Superman'

With Henry Cavill's exit as DC Films' Man of Steel, it seems DC fans will have to wait several years at least before Superman soars into theaters again.

It's been reported that British actor Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman as Warners is set to focus on getting Supergirl on the big screen.

According to sources, there won't be a new stand-alone Superman movie any time soon either, meaning Cavill will age out of the role as well. Though far from a box-office bomb, it wasn't the Avengers-sized hit Warner Bros were hoping for. The studio was apparently not looking to make a solo Superman film in the immediate future - instead looking towards a Supergirl origin story.

Following Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, Cavill was in talks to cameo in the upcoming Shazam! The storyline would feature Kal-El as an infant so Cavill wouldn't be necessary. After contract talks between Cavill's WME reps and Warners broke down, talks eventually spiraled into Cavill leaving the role for good. Rumors about such a move swirled last week when it was announced that Cavill would be starring in Netflix's video-game adaptation The Witcher, and it does indeed appear that scheduling conflicts may have been the initial root of the problem.

With its Supergirl plans, WB is said to be keen to shelve the character of Superman for a few years before a Bond style reboot with a new leading man. Ben Affleck already left Batman so he's not even the first to abandon ship, but this one stings a bit more for DC. 'There's a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn't work, ' says the studio insider.
