Syria state media: Israel fired missiles at Damascus airport

An Israeli missile attack targeted the Syrian capital's airport late Saturday, activating air defenses which shot down a number of the projectiles, Syria's state news agency SANA reported.

Reports in Syrian media said that Russian-made S-200 air defense systems were destroyed in the missile attack.

The Israeli military would not confirm the claim, saying it does not comment on foreign reports.

The agency released a short video showing what is says is an anti-aircraft missile in flight over Damascus.

Syrian state media last reported Israeli strikes on September 4, when it said its air defences downed several missiles in the coastal province of Tartus and in central Hama.

Israel's air force has struck scores of targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Hezbollah. "The missiles, suspected to be Israeli, destroyed an arms warehouse near the Damascus global airport", Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

In May, Israel said it attacked nearly all of Iran's military infrastructure in Syria, after Iranian forces fired rockets at Israeli-held territory for the first time in the most extensive military exchange ever between the two adversaries, Haaretz reported.
