Trump Falsely Claims 3000 Puerto Ricans Did Not Die After Hurricane Maria

Ron DeSantis ― who during the primary campaign dressed his infant son in a "Make America Great Again" onesie for a TV commercial to show his adoration of Trump ― released a statement disagreeing with Trump's assertion that 3,000 people did not die because of the storm and that the number was the work of Democrats.

The death toll from Maria, the most powerful storm to hit there in nearly a century, was raised last month from 64, a number widely discounted as far too low, to 2,975. "I think Puerto Rico was an incredible, unsung success", the president said. Indirect deaths are harder to count because they can include such things as heart attacks, electrocutions from downed power lines and failure to receive dialysis because the power is out - and those kinds of fatalities can happen after a storm has ended but while an area is struggling to restore electricity, clean water and other health and safety services.

The mayor of Ceiba, Angel Cruz Ramos, told CNN he's grateful for the generosity, but believes that too much water was delivered at the wrong time.

Trump continued to cast doubt on the final death toll from Hurricane Maria on Friday, and distorted an academic study that estimated 3,000 deaths in Puerto Rico in the months after the storm.

Researchers attributed undercounting of storm-related deaths to poor communications and the lack of well-established guidelines and training for physicians on how to certify deaths in major disasters.

"He's talking about the one a year ago, because he's been tweeting a lot about what a great job he did responding to Hurricane Maria, that decimated Puerto Rico last year", Colbert said. This Twitter rant also arrives after Trump allocated nearly $10,000,000 from FEMA (The Federal Emergency Management Agency) to ICE (The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

DeSantis and Scott have taken pains to court the Puerto Rican vote, with Florida's outgoing governor having visited the island seven times since Hurricane Maria made landfall. "When Trump arrived in Puerto Rico, he threw paper towels at the people when they were actually asking for help and while he was doing that, people were dying all around him", said Ortiz.

Santos-Vasquez said the president's numbers are wrong.

"I hate that people make it a political issue", Cora said before Thursday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

"If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them on to the list", he tweeted. We will never know how many we lost.

Almost a year after Hurricane Maria barreled across the Caribbean and devastated Puerto Rico, the island has become the focal point of a stormy political debate involving Congress and the White House over how the Trump Administration responded to the disaster.

"This is what denial following neglect looks like: Mr Pres in the real world people died on your watch".

"Only Donald Trump could see the tragedy in Puerto Rico and conclude that he is the victim", said Senator Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat.
