United States identifies remains of two servicemen killed in the Korean War

According to recent reports, on Monday, the US military agency leading the analysis on bodies have confirmed that they have identified the remains of the first two American troops which were mixed together with other 55 boxes of other countries human remains which were obtained from the 1950 to 1953 Korean War which were handed over by the North Korea in the beginning of July.

Nevertheless, according to the U.S, the identifications process is anticipated to chip away at least 7,699 US troops who remain unaccounted for in the Korean War.

Mattis says talks are ongoing with North Korea to get additional remains repatriated.

Forensic anthropologists have been examining the remains at a facility on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Reuters reported.

North Korea returned 55 boxes of remains as part of a denuclearization agreement reached between its leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump at their Singapore summit in June. Vice President Pence spoke at the repatriation ceremony, where he praised the event as "tangible progress" in negotiations between the US and North Korea.

Researchers and analysts at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii have so far sampled 23 of the 55 sets of remains returned in late July.

The condition of some of the remains is decidedly better than that of others. One set was identified as a tall black American. "There could be some more and maybe right after Christmas", he said. Her grandfather, now 90, is a survivor of the war who came from one of the areas of present-day North Korea that saw some of the heaviest fighting.

The July transfer coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice that ended fighting between North Korean and Chinese forces and South Korean and US -led forces under the U.N. Command. The two nations are still technically at war, but hostilities ended following the signing of what was meant to be a temporary armistice in 1953.
