Verizon 5G home Internet

What is 5G, and what can we expect from it?

United States operator Verizon is using the limited launch of a new fixed wireless access service to claim victory in the 5G race. Routers will be upgraded when new product is available. The service will have a limited availability initially, with the carrier saying it will first launch 5G Home in parts of LA, Sacramento, Houston, and Indianapolis.

After teasing the first cities that'll get its 5G home broadband service, Verizon today revealed when it's going to flip its 5G switch.

Verizon 5G Home won't have hardware costs and should produce "typical network speeds around 300Mbps" with peak speeds at "nearly 1 Gig". There are no data caps with Verizon 5G Home. After that, though, the cost goes up considerably: Verizon wireless customers with a qualifying phone plan will pay $50 a month while the service will run subscribers without Verizon Wireless $70 a month.

"First On 5G" customers will get free professional installation and a free router along with the first crack at scoring 5G-capable Verizon smartphones as they become available.

Customers will also get three free months of YouTube TV and a free Apple TV 4K or Google Chromecast Ultra, Verizon said.

The service is directly targeted at incumbent cable providers Comcast and Charter in those cities: "Verizon 5G Home is ideal for consumers looking to "cut the cord" or upgrade from their current cable service", Verizon said. Verizon says it will expand 5G broadband internet to additional cities, but didn't provide a time frame. While the home Internet service uses multiple spectrum bands, Verizon said it is heavily dependent on millimeter wave frequencies, "the only spectrum with the bandwidth to realize the full 5G potential for capacity, throughput and latency". "We appreciate the partnership of network equipment makers, device manufacturers, software developers, and chip makers in reaching this critical milestone".
