A ninth child has died in a New Jersey rehabilitation facility that is now suffering an adenovirus outbreak, according to officials. The affected children in the facility's pediatric ventilator unit had severely compromised immune systems, including respiratory problems, before the outbreak began, according to the agency.

The new diagnosis brings the total number of cases at the facility to 25. An adult staff member also was infected, and that person has since recovered.

The ninth child became ill before October 22 and died on October 28, the New Jersey Department of Health said.

Adenoviruses frequently cause mild to severe illness with cold-like symptoms, particularly in young children.

An additional "medically fragile child" who had a confirmed case of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation died Saturday night, the state's health department said.

This month, NJ.com reported that in the center's most recent health inspection report, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services gave the facility a "below average" score, and the 2017 report also said the facility "failed to ensure infection control practices were followed".

"This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts are with the families who are grieving right now", Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said.

Health officials found minor hand-washing deficiencies at the facility during visits last week, and have been working with the center on infection-control issues, the health department said. The health department was first notified of the outbreak on October 9, according to a statement from the agency.

The infection can cause other illnesses, including pneumonia, diarrhea and bronchitis, the department said.

The facility is still not admitting any new patients and won't until the outbreak is over.
