China says unaware ex-Interpol president's wife threatened

The French ministry said last Friday that Meng's family had not heard from him since September 25, and French authorities said his wife was under police protection after getting threats.

"Interpol has requested through official law enforcement channels clarification from China's authorities on the status of Interpol President Meng Hongwei", he said. Many don't have a chance to speak up even if they want to: spouses of officials under investigation, if they're in China, would likely be placed under 24-hour surveillance, Lam said. Interpol later said it had received his resignation, effective immediately. It made no mention of the former Interpol president's whereabouts or the Chinese investigation.

Meng, the first Chinese president of Interpol, is known as a former close aide of Zhou Yongkang, formerly a member of the elite Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party. The newspaper cited an unnamed source. Last week, actress Fan Bingbing, who disappeared in July, was fined $129 million for tax evasion.

"Imagine if China were to somehow, someday, get a United Nations secretary general, and then he too one day disappeared", said Michael Caster, a researcher and human rights advocate in Bangkok who studies China's legal system.

Mr Meng, also a Vice-Minister for Public Security in China, went missing after travelling to China last month.

The French police took the family under their protection after receiving threats through social media and telephone.

In an emotional press conference on Sunday, Grace told reporters that concern for her husband is a matter that "belongs to the global community".

"From now on, I have gone from sorrow and fear to the pursuit of truth, justice and responsibility toward history", she said at a briefing.

She said she thought he sent an image of a knife before he disappeared in China as a way to warn her he was in danger.

"We still don't have sufficient information about what's happening (with Meng) or whether it has anything to do with Chinese domestic politics", he told the Associated Press.

China's move to go after the Interpol president, an official with worldwide standing, was unusually audacious even for an administration that under Xi's leadership has sought to assert its interests more aggressively on the global stage. His "resignation" and apparent detention makes it clear that it's the laws of China - and the rules of it's governing Communist Party - that trump all else for any government official. South Korea's Kim Jong Yang will be Interpol's acting president until a new one is elected at the next general assembly in November.

Meng, 64, became president of the global police cooperation agency in late 2016 amid a broader effort by China to secure leadership posts in worldwide organisations. And he had a hand in Chinese police operations that reached overseas, including Operation Fox Hunt, which sought to repatriate hundreds of former Chinese officials and businesspeople who had fled overseas and were suspected of corruption. The appeal - especially unusual for senior Chinese officials - cast an unwelcome light on extralegal detentions that have increasingly ensnared dissidents and allegedly corrupt or disloyal officials alike under President Xi Jinping's authoritarian administration.

Meng Hongwei could have not only accepted bribes, but also "compromises the national security", assumes Su Wei, a professor in a school of cadres of the communist Party of china (CPC), cited Tuesday by the daily official Global Times.

It must have been rather inconvenient, then, for its executive to deal with the disappearance of its president, Meng Hongwei, in late September.

"It shows that no one is above the law with no exceptions".

His case could tarnish Beijing's efforts to gain leadership posts in worldwide organisations, but it is also a black eye for France-based Interpol, which is tasked with finding missing people, analysts say.
