Deadly Michael ravages Southeast with 'unimaginable destruction'

A day after making landfall near Mexico Beach in Florida as a Category 4 monster packing 155 miles per hour winds, Tropical Storm Michael continued to weaken but was still threatening the Southeast with heavy rains, heavy winds and possible spinoff tornadoes.

Her home was reduced to crumbled cinderblocks and pieces of floor tile.

Florida Governor Rick Scott said the storm had caused "unbelievable devastation" and the priority for the moment was looking for survivors among residents who failed to heed orders to evacuate.

"Our hearts are with the thousands who have sustained property damage, in many cases entirely wiped out", Trump said.

While search-and-rescue teams were having difficulty reaching some areas on Thursday, the extent of the damage is slowly becoming clear with the before and after images showing the severe destruction. Twisted street signs lay on the ground.

Authorities said at least two people have died, a man killed by a tree falling on a Panhandle home and an 11-year-old girl killed by a tree falling on a home in southwest Georgia. As many as 389,639 customers in Florida, 484,487 customers in North Carolina, 117,000 customers in Georgia, 24,000 customers in Alabama, 9,163 customers in SC and 61,067 customers in Virginia. Officials are opening temporary hospitals in that area.

The damage at Bay Medical Sacred Heart hospital included blown-out windows, a cracked exterior wall and a roof collapse in a maintenance building. Both were killed when trees crashed onto their homes.

In Panama City, buildings were crushed, tall pine trees were sent flying and a steeple was knocked off a church.

If destroyed homes, lost livelihoods and mass power outages were not enough to be dealing with, Florida's victims of Hurricane Michael are facing another potential problem - the state's toxic red tide.

President Donald Trump on Thursday approved disaster declarations for four Florida counties, clearing the way for federal aid to the hardest hit areas.

The Carolinas are still recovering from the floods of Hurricane Florence.

Michael, which decreased to a tropical storm overnight, is continuing to weaken as it moves along the southeast USA coast.

Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland, behind the unnamed Labour Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969. As reported by The Weather Channel, the hurricane-turned-tropical-storm continues to travel up the East Coast with wind speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.
