Dettori repeats Arc de Triomphe success on flying Enable

Paris: Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi, Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC) Chairman, stressed the success of the 2018 renewal of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (QPAT), which was concluded yesterday in Paris.

John Gosden's Enable was a brilliant victor of Europe's premier middle-distance contest last season and although she missed much of the current campaign through injury, an impressive comeback at Kempton ensured she was a red-hot favourite to become the eighth dual victor of the Arc.

In contrast, having been drawn wide, the William Haggas-trained Sea Of Class was dropped out last by James Doyle and was still a long way off the pace rounding the home turn.

Sea Of Class rattled home once in the clear to set up an epic finish, but Enable had just enough to claim a popular victory in Europe's premier middle-distance race. Cloth of Stars finished third.

"It's not been the preparation we wanted". Earlier this week, Gosden also suggested that Enable could continue her campaign with a trip to the United States for the Breeders' Cup. She actually likes to train and she wasn't able to do that, so it's a matter of keeping them happy and within themselves, not letting them over-extend.

"She's only had a canter round Kempton (this season) - she was not the Enable of previous year, but she got the job done because of her class".

The 47-year-old Italian, who also combined with Gosden to land the 2015 Arc with Golden Horn, says the filly is incredibly special.

"If she's in great order, her owner/breeder Khalid Abdullah will make the decision, but it would be wonderful if he felt she would like to go for it", he said. "He wanted to come here and if she's in good form there's no reason you wouldn't try to come again".

An emotional Maureen Haggas, assistant to her husband, paid tribute to Doyle, saying: "When we got the draw, I rang my father (Lester Piggott) and said "oh, what do we do"? Incredible to think that it was only her second start this season but she will not surpass or equal Winx's mark of 130", Carpenter said. They've nursed her back from injury, overcome an 11th-hour "hiccup" when she briefly showed a temperature, and they have won Europe's greatest race off the back of the worst possible prep.
