Explosions rock Canada’s largest oil refinery as energy company confirms ‘major incident'

The president of the Maine Energy Marketers Association said that until the scope of the damage is known, it's not possible to say what, if any, impact the accident could have on the supply or price of heating fuel as the heating season begins.

Residents described feeling an explosion shortly after 10 a.m.

An explosion at a refinery in Canada's east coast has left residents shaken and concerned. But the health authority later tweeted that the hospital "is running as usual today".

Sean Tucker, an associate professor at the University of Regina who specializes in occupational health and safety, said there's a lot of public concern in Canada about how oil is transported, but not much attention is paid to refineries themselves.

Nick Hynes says he was not long off of the night shift when the blast occurred.

"At times we were letting that just safely extinguish itself", he said.

According to the Irving website, the refinery produces more than 320,000 barrels of "finished energy products" every day, with more than half going the USA northeast.

Nate Guimond, 36, told the AP he was doing house repairs when he saw smoke. Several streets have been closed down.

Mark Melanson and Jocelyn Legassie were sitting at the Tim Hortons on Hickey Road, about three kilometres away from the refinery, when they heard a popping sound.

He chose to drive by the refinery and said he was nearby when he felt the vibrations of what he assumed must have been a second explosion.

Irving says on Twitter that the company is "actively assessing the situation" and will share more information when it becomes available.

When he walked outside, he noticed black smoke coming from the refinery, so he hopped into the auto, drove down the corner and saw fire about 30 metres high.

An explosion and fire ripped through Canada's largest refinery on Monday in what the company that owns it called a "major incident".
