Google Home Hub is smart display that lacks a camera

Yesterday Google launched an enhanced version with new colour choice (chalk/charcoal), and a faster processor.

Google on Tuesday launched a new version of its connected speaker with a touchscreen display created to be a hub for smart home devices but without a camera for privacy reasons. There are also other bundles, mostly focusing on Nest (also owned by Google) smart home products and the new Home Hub display.

This is a major update to the usability of the Home app that up until now had little operational use aside from managing your Assistant account and paired devices.

The Google Home Hub is a 7-inch tablet mounted on a speaker that doubles as a base.

The Home Hub is powered by Google Assistant and is compatible with a number of platforms, including devices running Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Chrome OS. Google Assistant is a strong voice assistant and we've had solid experiences with the standard Home, the Home Mini, and the more top-of-the-line Home Max. If you don't have the Home App you can download it below and then start spamming on that update button. For voice commands the device has a 2 mic array.

The photo feature may wind up being one of the most useful. It allows the screen to automatically adjust to match the lighting in the room, so photos on Google Home Hub will blend in with the room, too.

In tandem with that new piece of hardware, Google is updating the Google Home app to better reflect its intention to have Google Home be the one application you need to control the tech in your house.

Google chose to not include a camera on Google Home Hub, so you feel comfortable placing it your home, like the bedroom. When it's time for bed, Hub knows to dim the screen for a good night's sleep.

The app also lets you add "home members, ' who will have the ability to control connected devices from outside the local network".

Home view lets you control all of your internet of things devices with one clean interface.

The Chromecast HDMI TV streaming accessory device was first launched back in 2013.

Lastly, you can use Google Home Hub to watch YouTube videos - something you can't do on Amazon's Echo devices.

This leaves the Google Home Hub as a cheaper alternative to the Portal ($199-plus) or the Echo Show ($230), and something the company thinks customers will feel more comfortable placing all around their homes.

Pre-orders are open now.
