Hurricane Michael European Model Shows Storm Intensifying

Florida's governor has mobilised National Guard troops and ordered Gulf Coast residents to head inland as Hurricane Michael churned toward shore, with the storm forecast to strengthen rapidly before making landfall on Wednesday.

Weather models showed 3 to 6 inches of rain possible across the eastern Midlands area with locally higher amounts, according to the weather service.

Michael could enhance rainfall in the mid-Atlantic on Thursday night and Friday.

In Volusia County, emergency management director Jim Judge said residents are looking at "breezy conditions, some rain and potentially a couple of good gusts through the squalls".

Rain chances stand at 60 percent in Orlando on Tuesday and Wednesday before jumping to 70 percent on Thursday.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall Wednesday in Florida before crossing Georgia and the Carolinas as a weaker storm.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott expanded a state of emergency declaration Tuesday to include 35 counties in preparation for the storm.

The governors of Florida, Alabama and Georgia declared states of emergency as Michael closed in, and hundreds of Florida National Guard members were activated.

Leslie is of no concern to Florida or the United States.

A year ago saw a string of catastrophic storms batter the western Atlantic - including Irma, Maria and Hurricane Harvey - causing a record-equalling $125bn in damage when it flooded the Houston metropolitan area.

"My expectation is if you're responsible for a patient, you're responsible for the patient. You need to take care of yourselves".

In the small Panhandle city of Apalachicola, Mayor Van Johnson Sr. said the 2,300 residents were frantically preparing for what could be a strike unlike any seen there in decades.

Hurricane Michael grew to a category-two storm as it propelled towards the Florida coast. Residents also stocked up on food, water and gas.

Residents of barrier islands, mobile homes and low-lying coastal areas in Gulf, Wakulla and Bay counties were ordered to evacuate by late Monday or early Tuesday.

By 8 p.m. Monday, Michael's top sustained winds were around 85 miles per hour (140 kph) as it headed north at 12 miles per hour (19 kph).

"This storm has the potential to be a historic storm, please take heed", the sheriff's office said in the post. Since the ground remains saturated in places, that could mean flash flooding, and trees in wet ground can topple more easily in high winds.

The National Weather Service has warned the hurricane could have catastrophic impacts in the Big Bend and Panhandle as it moves ashore with powerful winds and a life-threatening storm surge, then turns northeastward to the Carolinas.

The storm was located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Cuba's western tip and 520 miles (837 kilometers) south of Apalachicola, Florida.

Michael lashed western Cuba Monday with heavy rains and strong winds. Storms with winds of at least 111 miles per hour are designated as "major" hurricanes.

RMS looked at where hurricane Michael is due to make landfall and found that the most similar storms were Category 2 Kate in 1985, which is estimated to have caused around a $1 billion insurance and reinsurance market loss, or Category 3 Eloise in 1975 which is estimated to have resulted in a $3.6 billion insurance and reinsurance industry loss.

"I do think we ought to do whatever we can to extend registration to folks, especially given the fact that most people are trying to scurry away from these areas", Gillum said Monday. Plenty of water. I made sure we've got clean clothes.

A major concern also is restoring electricity after what is expected to be widespread power outages.

"Hurricane Michael poses a deadly threat".

A hurricane Warning was issued from the Alabama-Florida border eastward to Suwannee River.
