Israeli PM's wife on trial over fraud

Israeli PM's wife on trial over fraud

On Friday, police in Tel Aviv questioned Mr Netanyahu for several hours as part of a separate investigation into accusations of corruption against the politician.

Sara Netanyahu arrives to testify at the Menny Naftali trial at the Jerusalem Labor Court on May 10, 2015. She has denied any wrongdoing.

According to the rules of the state, the chefs at the residence of the Prime Minister must provide them and their immediate families daily meals. Ms Netanyahu was not asked to enter a plea.

If convicted, Sara could face up to five years in prison.

Netanyahu is suspected of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in "Case 1000", also known as the "Gifts Case", regarding his relationship with Israeli businessman Arnon Milchan and Australian businessman James Packer.

In 2016, a court ruled that she had abused one of her housekeepers and was ordered to pay a fine of $42,000 (£32,189).

The wife of the Israeli prime minister went on trial in Jerusalem yesterday for fraud and embezzlement, following allegations that she spent £75,000 of taxpayers' money on food prepared by celebrity chefs.

The court later awarded the Netanyahus $32,500.

This is one of the multiple scandals facing the Netanyahu family with opponents and some media outlets portraying the Netanyahu administration as being out of touch with the average Israeli citizen.

The right-wing prime minister has held the job for a total of more than 12 years, first from 1996 to 1999 and again beginning in 2009.

The indictment accuses Mrs Netanyahu of spending 360,000 shekels (about $100,000 USD) on catering services while at the same time employing a cook, in violation of the law, between 2010 and 2013.

Other former employees have also claimed mistreatment and accused her of charging the state for her private and lavish tastes, including pink champagne and other luxuries.

Police have recommended Benjamin Netanyahu be indicted in two cases, though the attorney general has yet to decide whether to do so.

In that case, Benjamin Netanyahu is alleged to have sought favourable coverage from another Elovitch company, the Walla news site, in exchange for government policies that could have benefited the mogul's interests to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.
