Kavanaugh to hear first arguments as Supreme Court justice

Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that President Donald Trump staged a "political rally" at Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's ceremonial swearing-in that "further undermined the image and integrity of the court".

President Donald Trump's appointee wasted little time in getting down to business, asking his first question of a lawyer representing a defendant about 20 minutes into arguments concerning a federal criminal sentencing law.

Brett Kavanaugh took the bench with his new Supreme Court colleagues for the first time Tuesday in a jovial atmosphere that was strikingly at odds with the tension and rancor surrounding his high-court confirmation.

Kavanaugh's confirmation proceedings exploded in controversy after Christine Blasey Ford went public with allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982.

"First of all, no he wasn't", declared Kimmel.

He said that "under historic scrutiny", Mr Kavanaugh was "proven innocent". "If, you know, the Republicans, starting with President Trump on down, want a comparison, they should welcome such an investigation themselves". "The Washington Monument is like a big middle finger now".

Trump is apologizing to Kavanaugh and his family for "the bad suffering you have been forced to endure".

"What was done last night in the White House was a political rather". "But the Senate having failed to do its proper, constitutionally mandated job of advise and consent, we are going to have to do something to provide a check and balance, to protect the rule of law and to protect the legitimacy of one of our most important institutions".

Kavanaugh denied the allegations and during a Senate hearing on September 27 accused Democrats of an "orchestrated political hit". Kavanaugh will hear his first cases on Tuesday, when the court convenes at 10 a.m.

Two other women also accused Justice Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct dating to the 1980s. Throughout his exceptionally turbulent confirmation process, Kavanaugh touted his long history of empowering women in the workplace, pointing out how he's actually practiced what so many others preach. I think, given our divides, it will pretty much fall predictably between those who are for and those who are against.

He thanked the Republicans who stood with Kavanaugh and said "it was a great honor to be involved in this situation". Kavanaugh, in contrast, is expected to be a more decidedly conservative vote, tilting the court right for decades and leaving Roberts as the justice closest to the ideological middle. Susan Collins for casting the deciding vote, after thanking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen.

Kavanaugh's allies predicted the partisan air around his confirmation would fade.

President Trump has praised his US Supreme Court pick. The president later hosted a reception at the White House for Sotomayor, as he did a year later with Kagan.

Four unnamed sources told the Washington Post that the D.C. Circuit sent the complaints to Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. "It is very hard I think for a member of the public to look at what goes on in confirmation hearings these days, which is a very sharp conflict in political terms between Democrats and Republicans, and not think that the person who comes out of that process must similarly share that partisan view of public issues and public life".
