Nikki Haley resigns as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations

"I can promise you what I'll be doing is campaigning for this one", Haley said.

On her form, Haley identified the people who lent the aircraft as Jimmy Gibbs, the chief executive of Gibbs International Inc., as providing four flights.

In a January 2016 response to then-President Barack Obama's State of the Union address, she warned against following "the siren call of the angriest voices", a clear rebuke of Trump.

Retiring Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said: "She challenged friend and foe to be better". But with Pompeo in that role, and with Bolton serving as national security adviser, Haley has seen her time with the President diminish, sources said.

"I proudly serve in this administration, and I enthusiastically support most of its decisions and the direction it is taking the country", Haley wrote.

BBC New York correspondent Nick Bryant said Mrs Haley had formed a partnership with UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres to protect the UN against Mr Trump's anti-globalist agenda. "We've solved a lot of problems and we're in the process of solving a lot of problems", Trump said.

The meeting will be covered by a White House pool reporter.

Haley is the latest in a long list of senior staff members to leave the Trump administration, including former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was sacked in March. She spoke out against racism and on issues of gender.

"Now, the United States is respected", she said. But she also hinted at her disagreements with the President, saying she had a "personal conversation" with Trump about his response to white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia past year. She also lavished praise on Trump's leadership and foreign policy stances.

"I don't have anything set on where I want to go", Haley said, with the president at her side.

Haley's ability to speak eloquently and forcefully on contentious issues fueled much speculation that she has political ambitions beyond the United Nations, possibly including a White House run.

Update: Haley says there's no personal reason for her leaving, merely a recognition that public officials shouldn't serve forever.

Nikki Haley has unexpectedly resigned her role as United Nations ambassador, Axios reported Tuesday morning. Initially seen as inexperienced in foreign policy, she soon was taken seriously by her fellow United Nations diplomats as she pushed through three sets of sanctions against North Korea and persuaded China and Russian Federation, both allies of Pyongyang, to agree to abide by them.

The reasoning behind her resignation is not yet known.

Trump and Haley both exhibited warm demeanor and were mutually complimentary as they announced her departure.
