There's a new number one in 'world's most powerful' passport poll

There's a new leader on the worldwide passport index.

Japanese citizens can travel to 190 countries without a visa, revealed the Henley Passport Index 2018.

The 2018 Henley Passport Index, an annual ranking which links the world's passports according to how many countries their holders can gain visa-free access to, has shown that those with UAE passports can now travel unimpeded to 161 countries around the world.

Austria, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, and the United States complete the 5th spot with visa-free access to 186 destinations. France moved up a place last Friday when it gained visa-free access to Uzbekistan. The law firm says it updates the index in real-time, as and when visa-policy changes come into effect.

The two countries were previously tied for the top spot.

Russian Federation received a boost in September when Taiwan announced a visa-waiver, but the country has nonetheless fallen from 46th to 47th place due to movements higher up the ranking. All three countries can visit 188 countries without a visa.

It includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations.

Thanks to a wave of such agreements signed since May - including a new one with Myanmar just this month - Japan's passport now allows its citizens to enter 190 countries and territories without a visa (or obtain one upon arrival).

China also climbed by 14 positions to 71, with access to 74 destinations since 2017.

Iraq and Afghanistan continue to sit at the bottom of the Index.

What has been most remarkable in recent years is the UAE's stunning ascent on the Henley Passport Index, from 62nd place in 2006 to 21st place worldwide now.

Newcomer Moldova, which is due to launch its CBI program in November, has climbed 20 places since 2008. There are 218 countries in the world in total which require a visa.

Christian H. Kälin, Group Chairman of Henley & Partners, commented in a statement on "the extraordinary results that states can achieve when they work hand in hand with their global peers to build a more interconnected and collaborative world".
