Trump’s ‘Space Force’ to be built in stages by 2020

"It is the cost of inaction that we can't afford".

Pence said the administration would work with Congress, starting next year, on drafting a law creating an independent space force by 2020. There is an increasing threat to these from countries such as Russian Federation and China, he said.

Pence said the 1967 treaty "does ban weapons of mass destruction in space, but it doesn't ban military activity".

On Tuesday, Pence described the proposed Space Force as the "next and natural evolution of our armed forces", arguing that USA adversaries such as China and Russian Federation are developing new technologies, such as hypersonic missiles, that make space a place where wars can be fought.

China, not long ago, actually tested a missile that took out one of their own satellites, he said, referring to the deployment of additional and new anti-satellite technology into orbit, which are able to move in proximity to existing satellites. Pence announced in August that the administration hopes to establish Space Force as the sixth branch of the USA military as soon as 2020, the first since the Air Force was formed after World War II.

"That will be the project of the space force going forward".

The space force proposal has been criticized for stepping up the militarization of space, despite worldwide treaties supposedly designating space as a peaceful domain.

"In the first phase (space forces) will not look like other, already existing types of Armed Forces".

"Russia, in the very same year, assigned a part of its aerospace division to a space force", the vice president said.

The council's recommendations are set to be made at a meeting later on Tuesday at the National Defense University in Washington, where Vice President Mike Pence is also scheduled to speak.

Ultimately, Congress will have to approve adding the Space Force as the sixth branch of the US military. The US President promised to return the United States to the moon and to reach Mars.
