Turkey believes journalist killed in Saudi consulate

Mr Hunt's intervention followed the publication of a CCTV image apparently showing Mr Khashoggi walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, just before he went missing. According to Turkish authorities, it is their strong assessment that not only was the murder premeditated, Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi agents and his "dead body" was later mysteriously removed.

The Washington Post said it would be a "monstrous and unfathomable act" if he had been killed. Jamal Khashoggi has not been seen since he entered the building last week.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate in Istanbul for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée.

Vice President Mike Pence said he was "deeply troubled" about reports of Khashoggi's fate.

Turkish president Erdogan says he has positive expectations on his condition. But Mr Khashoggi thought he had the situation under control. She added that she was waiting for official confirmation as the allegations circulated.

While Riyadh claimed he had left the consulate after his visit, Turkish police said Khashoggi did not emerge from the building.

He said the consulate was equipped with cameras but they did not record footage, so no images could be retrieved of Khashoggi entering or leaving the consulate, which is ringed by police barriers and has high security fences topped with barbed wire.

But he added that diplomatic cars had been seen moving in and out.

Salah Khashoggi confirmed that all members of his family support the official Saudi investigations, which only "will lead us to positive results and uncover the truth".

What have the Saudis said? The case would not go unsolved, Aktay said.

Khashoggi was one journalist who chose to "report the reality".

"We trust the government and the actions taken by it and all the efforts being made in the case of Jamal Khashoggi".

I have known Jamal Khashoggi for 18 years and although outspoken, he was not one to take unplanned risks.

The foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has warned Saudi Arabia that its friendship with the United Kingdom depends on shared values, after he demanded answers over claims that a Saudi hit squad may have played a role in the disappearance and possible killing of Jamal Khashoggi.

Ties between Ankara and Riyadh are at a low point over Turkey's support for Qatar in its year-long dispute with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations. But if proven, the murder of Jamal Khashoggi would be the most serious diplomatic crisis between the two in living memory.

Turkey would hope for backing from its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, the US.

"At the moment there are certain people who arrived from Saudi Arabia".

Over the past year Khashoggi used his platform as a Washington Post columnist to criticize the policies of Saudi Arabia's powerful young crown prince, from the war in Yemen to the arrest of women's rights advocates.

The crown prince has unveiled reforms praised by the West while carrying out an apparent crackdown on dissent.

A member of the Saudi elite, he had remained in exile in the USA for much of the past year, from where he wrote columns for The Washington Post critiquing aspects of the Kingdom's reform programme. It could cause the US and Europe to reevaluate their relationships with Saudi Arabia, and with Turkish officials so enraged by this, it could trigger a more serious response.

Khashoggi's disappearance could put pressure on the Saudi prince, who has promoted an image of himself as a reformer and a reliable Western ally. "They gave me a platform to write freely and I wish I had that platform in my home".
