At least 6, including deputy, injured in shooting at California bar

Ventura County Fire Department said on its website that firefighters and first responders were at the scene of a reported shooting in Ventura County in California.

Ventura County Sheriff's Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian said at a news conference early Thursday that a sheriff's deputy was also shot and taken to a hospital.

Police told the Los Angeles Times at least 30 shots were fired.

It's thought that a man opened fire at the bar with a semi-automatic gun at about 11.20pm.

He said the man set off smoke grenades inside before opening fire.

The extent of the victim's injuries has not yet been released.

The Los Angeles Times reports an event for college students was due to be held at the venue tonight.

Witness John Hedge told ABC's 13WLOS TV station that said he saw a suspect throwing smoke bombs into the front of the restaurant. I look up - the security guard is dead.

Police have described it as a "mass casualty incident" and helicopters are swirling overhead.

There were reports of more gunfire as officers responded.

It is thought the gunman may still be at large and at least police officer is injured.

He told reporters: "When our deputies arrive on the scene they attempted to neutralise that threat, I can't tell you if it was neutralised or not".
