Australia deaths: Family found dead near broken-down vehicle in outback

A MAJOR land and air search is now underway for a child after three people were found dead in a remote area in the Northern Territory.

The brutal final moments of a young family-of-three and a 12-year-old boy found dead in Australia's unforgiving remote Outback have been revealed.

An air and land search was conducted Thursday to look for a 12-year-old boy who Nobbs said was believed to have been in the vehicle with the family.

However, the remains have not been formally identified.

On Wednesday, the bodies of a 19-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman and a three -year-old were discovered near Willowra, about 300 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs.

Police first found out about the deaths of two adults and one child after a man informed the Willowra Health Clinic on Wednesday afternoon.

"Although police have no information that suggests there were other passengers in the auto, we will continue a precautionary land and air search until we are satisfied that all areas of interest have been sufficiently canvassed", Southern Desert Division Superintendent Jody Nobbs said.

"Although police have no information that suggests there were other passengers in the auto, we will continue a precautionary land and air search until we are satisfied that all areas of interest have been sufficiently canvassed", he said.

The deaths were initially thought to have been caused by a vehicle crash - but that was quickly ruled out as the tragic reality of the situation became clear. "This is a tragic situation from a police perspective", Superintendent Jody Nobbs told a news conference Thursday.

"Initially we thought it was the result of a auto crash, however we're confident it's not".

Superintendent Nobbs said the incident should serve as a warning to others travelling through remote Northern Territory.

The missing child's name has not been released, but the neighbouring communities have been made aware of who he is so they can help in the search.

Their deaths are not being treated as suspicious and the authorities are investigating whether exposure to the elements may have contributed to the tragedy.
