Australian police say several people stabbed in Melbourne; man arrested

Mobile phone footage shows a man, wielding a weapon, attacking officers about 4.20pm.

Officers were confronted near the burning auto by a man "brandishing a knife and threatening them" while passersby called out that people had been stabbed, Victoria state police Supt.

Australian police said one person died at the scene and another two others were being treated for their injuries.

The journalist also said an emergency speaker system was warning people to avoid the area.

Speaking at a news conference, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said that the suspect had "family associations that were well known" to police and that he had been known to Australia's security agency.

The officers ultimately fired a shot, causing the man to fall down. One of the injured was reportedly in suspected critical condition with a neck injury, while another had sustained a head injury.

The man then produced a knife and lunged at the police officers.

Ashton added that Counter Terrorism Command will investigate alongside Victoria police. "It's very early in the stages of the investigation", Supt Clayton said.

"Trolley man", who has not yet been identified, has been praised online for his bravery, alongside several other members of the public who rushed to help the three victims who had been stabbed in the attack. As the attacks continued, one policeman shot the suspect in the chest, leaving him in a critical condition.

Witnesses said they heard a big bang and images appeared to show a auto on fire.

Superintendent Clayton said there is no known link to terrorism at this stage.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews led the online praise of the officers and the passers-by who "came to the aid of complete strangers".

One witness told the Herald Sun that bystanders were calling to police, "shoot him, shoot him".

"And then I heard one loud bang". He sprung back into action and charged back towards the attacker, shoving the trolley back in his direction as police opened fire.

"Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to go to Melbourne West Police Station to make a statement", a police statement said.
