Barcelona loses to Real Betis despite Messi's two goals

The club from Seville began the match in 16th place but produced an irresistible performance in becoming the first team to win at Barca's home in any competition since 2016 and the first to score four goals there in 15 years.

Arturo Vidal's tap-in gave Barca hope, but Sergio Canales got the away side's fourth, before a Messi consolation.

Pau Lopez superbly tipped over Clement Lenglet's stretching volley five minutes later before an incisive counter attack doubled Betis' advantage in the 34th minute.

Messi briefly rekindled the comeback in the 79th when he threaded a pass forward for substitute Munir El Haddadi, who laid off for Vidal to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

His second was a tap in from close range. The goal was eventually given after a VAR review for offside, but it was too little, too late for Valverde's shell-shocked side.

Barca remain top of LaLiga, but neighbours Espanyol will pull level with them on 24 points if they overcome Sevilla on Sunday. Betis, meanwhile, can toast a momentous win that lifts them up to 12th.

Lionel Messi scored twice on his return to action following a broken arm but could not stop Barcelona suffering a surprise defeat at home to Real Betis.

- This was the first time Barcelona have conceded four goals in competitive game at the Camp Nou since April 2003 vs Deportivo de La Coruna (2-4).

Messi broke his arm against Sevilla on October 20 but made a quick recovery to take his place in Barcelona's starting XI at Camp Nou.

Gio LO CELSO also scored, his was a shot which goalkeeper TER STEGEN tried to catch but it went through the hands of the German.

Lo Celso then set up Joaquin with an inch-perfect cross, only for him to volley over the bar as the onrushing Marc-Andre ter Stegen did just enough to put off the Betis winger.
