BMW unveils 8 Series Convertible

It looks like the new BMW 8 series convertible has been leaked ahead of the official launch, a number of photos of the vehicle have appeared online. The pictures - the manufacturer's own - show the plush and potent M850i xDrive version, which uses the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 you'd find in the coupe, offering 530hp and 553lb ft of torque.

The 8 Series Convertible, like its coupe sibling, will offer a suite of active safety and driver assistance technologies out of the box, including a head-up display, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, speed sign recognition, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear collision warning. That's a $9,500 price hike over the M850i Coupe, but for well-heeled buyers who love open-top motoring, it's a small price to pay. Opening or closing happens with the push of a button and can be done in 15 seconds while in motion up to 50 km/h. That's because additional reinforcement is required to make bodies of convertibles stiffer than their coupes stablemates.

We're told that both engine meet the Euro 6d-TEMP standard and sent power to all four wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

The convertible will be offered in two variants in Europe, the M850i xDrive, which is powered by a new version of BMW's TwinPower Turbo 4.4-liter, V-8 engine that generates 523 hp and can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour (100 kph) in 3.9 seconds.

Speaking of the roof, BMW says the soft-top can be raised or lowered in only 15 seconds at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. This setup enables the convertible to rocket from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96 km/h) in 3.8 seconds before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour (250 km/h). Even more comfort is available from the optional neck warmers and air blowers in the seats.

Customers looking for a sportier appearance can order the optional M Carbon Exterior Package.

We've already had the debut of the new BMW 8 Series as a range-topping BMW Coupe - taking the mantle from the 6 Series - and we're due to see the new 8 Series Convertible launch tomorrow (2 November 2018). Night vision is available, too.
