Bruce Irvin going home - to Atlanta, not the Seahawks

Bruce Irvin going home - to Atlanta, not the Seahawks

He was Irvin's position coach from when Seattle drafted him in the first round in 2012 until he signed a $27.7 million contract with the Oakland Raiders following the 2015 season.

Irvin, who was born in Atlanta and played high school football in the area, agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday. Atlanta, meanwhile, has 17 sacks this season, tied for fifth-fewest in the league. Those were the seasons Seattle went to consecutive Super Bowls, with Irvin winning a championship with the Seahawks in January 2014.

The Falcons defense dealt with some major losses due to injuries to several key players early this season, but they've rebounded in recent weeks and have begun to find their stride. The 31-year-old has played in eight games this year and has totaled six tackles and three sacks.

It will be interesting to see if the Steelers eventually do add another pass rusher for this stretch run.

"We're a 4-3 team now, so in the base defense sometimes he doesn't fit the role we need done", he said.

Irvin, under his breath, replied, "They're right".

Clearly, Irvin is referring to being free from Jon Gruden, free from the bad record and on a team that is now riding a 3-game winning streak and trending up.

What Seattle loses in not getting Irvin to return, though, is a player who has been a consistent pass rushing threat almost his entire career.

In Irvin's eyes, it was time to come home.

It was as if every other team knew there was no chance.
