Division III basketball player takes flagrant shot at opponent's head

Division III basketball player takes flagrant shot at opponent's head

On Tuesday, the Fitchburg State men's basketball team hosted the Bison of Nichols College for a non-conference game, and it would not go without incident. The Division III contest saw Nichols College guard Nate Tenaglia knock down a late 3-pointer before Platt cracked him in the face with an elbow. Platt was subsequently ejected.

The culprit, a junior guard by the name of Kewan Platt, has since been suspended from school and barred from campus, according to TMZ.

During the waning minutes of the 84-75 win by Nichols College, Platt had the ball on the offensive end. You can clearly see Platt check if the baseline ref was watching before carrying out the hit, but one of the refs caught the indiscretion and gave Platt his second technical foul of the game, resulting in his ejection from the game.

Nichols College's Athletic Director Chris Colvin also addressed the situation, saying officials were "troubled by the unfortunate incident" and continued monitoring Tenaglia's health after medical tests found that he did not suffer a concussion. "We are appalled by the actions of the student-athlete". In addition, the case is under review by Fitchburg State for consideration of further sanctions.

Fitchburg State basketball player Kewan Platt found himself in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons.

"The MASCAC and Fitchburg State University take this incident very seriously. On behalf of the MASCAC and Fitchburg State, we apologize to the Nichols College student-athlete, the team and institution".

'The MASCAC has also vacated his player of the week award. His behavior goes against the MASCAC's mission, which includes good sportsmanship.
