Djokovic eyes semis after dismissing Zverev at ATP Finals

With the family in tow, Ronaldo had prime seats to watch Novak Djokovic take on John Isner - the former ultimately trouncing the latter in straight sets to keep his quest for a record-equalling sixth Finals title on track. "I played well midway through the second set and started to swing through the ball", said Djokovic, who has suffered only two defeats in the Finals since 2012.

Novak Djokovic quickly dismissed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-1 to secure his second win of the week at the ATP World Tour Finals in London on Wednesday.

On the first day of play on Sunday, Kei Nishikori handed Roger Federer a surprise defeat as he won 7-6 (4), 6-3 while Kevin Anderson made a winning debut at the tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 (10) victory over Dominic Thiem. "I had three breaks of serve of John which is sometimes mission impossible, but I managed to be at the right place at the right time". Zverev then conjured up a match point with a sublime backhand victor at 30-30 at 5-4 but Cilic resisted and held serve with a strong serve down the middle.

"It takes a little bit of time really to get yourself adjusted to the surface because the surface is a good surface".

The writing was on the wall for Isner when Djokovic broke serve at 3-3 in the second set - the Serb roaring his approval.

Since the start of Wimbledon, he has now won 32 out of 34 matches.

The German No. 3 seed, who also defeated Cilic in their opening match of last year's season-ending tournament, was down a break of serve in both sets but came through 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) at the O2 Arena.

A forehand error from Isner confirmed the break, and the end of the contest.

Neither player faced a break point in the first eight games and even when Zverev earned the first two in the ninth, Djokovic found a way to scramble out of trouble on both occasions.

"The court is hard", said Zverev.

The 31-year-old was assailed by claims he had lost his hunger for success and was past his best after injury and personal issues threatened to derail his career in 2017. And it's very high-bouncing as well.

In press conference, the American admitted Djokovic was the better player: 'From the first point of the whole match he connected pretty well on a return, ' Isner said.

Zverev nailed a backhand victor down the line to earn five more match points and converted the first with a powerful first serve that Cilic fenced into the net.
