Donald Trump, after visit, slams France’s Emmanuel Macron as relations sour

A typical 750ml bottle of wine from the USA would face tariffs at the border of just a few cents, according to the European Commission's online tariff database. The ceremony also marked the Marine Corps 243rd birthday, and Trump's retreat to a Parisian hotel in the face of drizzle led to an eruption of derision from former officers as well as the usual critics back home.

The president slammed his French counterpart for his low approval rating, as well as France's high unemployment.

"He was just trying to get onto another subject", Trump said, appearing to reference Macron's push for a European military. But Trump's praise of French nationalism - and his call for making that nation "great again" - would seem to be in tension with his demand for France to sacrifice its national interests (on arms sales and wine tariffs) in the interest of fairness.

Trump on Sunday also missed a procession of world leaders who somberly walked shoulder-to-shoulder in the rain as bells tolled marking the exact moment the war's fighting ended: 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

In the same interview, Macron also spoke about cyber security threats and France having "to protect [itself] with respect to China, Russia and even the United States" - comments that were apparently taken out of context by many, including Trump, amid suggestions in media reports that the French president had named the three countries as military threats.

During the remarks on Sunday, the president Trump offered a shoutout to World War II in attendance, and at one point acknowledged one sitting under a shelter while he spoke during a light rain at the memorial site. They were starting to learn German in Paris before the US came along. "I like the idea of President Trump pushing NATO to pay more, getting out of the intermediate ballistic missile treaty with Russian Federation - made sense to me because Russia's cheating and the treaty doesn't cover China and North Korea..."

In a caustic series of early-morning tweets the USA president lambasted Macron's support for a European army, while renewing his frequent charge that America's European allies in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spend too little on defense.

As an example, a bottle of white American wine with 13 percent alcohol content imported into the European Union carries a customs duty of 10 euro cents (a bit over 11 US cents).

He was also criticised for cancelling a visit to U.S. war cemetery Belleau Wood on Saturday afternoon due to "bad weather".

Trump claimed that there was "almost zero visibility" which grounded the helicopter and that he himself suggested driving, but was told it was impossible by secret services.

Belam, Martin. "French Army Trolls Trump with Picture of Them Training in Rain".

Once translated, the Tweet reads, "There is rain, but it does not matter".

Macron's request was made because the French president didn't want to be upstaged at the commemorative event, according to the Russian newspaper Kommersant.

Nursing grievances from a weekend visit to France, Trump lit into Macron today over his suggestion for a European defense force, over French tariffs on US wine and even Macron's approval ratings. The denunciation was widely interpreted as a not-so-veiled shot at President Trump's political philosophy.

Many people had taken Macron's comments during the World War I commemoration to be directed toward Trump, speaking harshly against "nationalism" after the US leader described himself as a "nationalist".

Trump's relationship with French President Emmanuel Macron has been deteriorating in recent weeks.

But Monday night, outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she supported Macron's plan and agreed that Europe shouldn't need to rely on the United States to supplement its military strength.

"You look so comfortable up there under shelter as we're getting drenched", Trump said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
