Donald Trump ends Emmanuel Macron 'bromance' with vicious Twitter attack

Donald Trump ends Emmanuel Macron 'bromance' with vicious Twitter attack

U.S. President Donald Trump is partly right but far from completely correct when he says that France's "big tariffs" make it hard for American vintners to sell their wines to the French.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the Secret Service convinced him to skip a planned November 10 visit to a cemetery about an hour's drive from Paris to honor the US fallen of World War I.

Trump suggested that Macron was trying to distract from his unpopularity. "By the way, there is no country more Nationalist than France, very proud people-and rightfully so!.MAKE FRANCE GREAT AGAIN!" he said.

According to the Wine Institute, the European Union levies tariffs ranging from 11 to 29 cents per bottle of US wine. "Not fair, must change!" he said.

"Here on the revered grounds of Suresnes American Cemetery lie more than 1,500 USA service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the first world war", Trump said, in his remarks at the cemetery, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission.

"On Trade, France makes excellent wine, but so does the U.S.", Trump tweeted.

Flying to Paris on Friday, Trump, in an interview with Europe 1, called Macron's European army talk "very insulting" adding "Europe should first pay its fair share of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which the USA subsidizes greatly!"

While the president did not make it to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial on Saturday, he did deliver remarks honoring America's World War I fallen the following day at the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial. Trump added, mirroring his campaign slogan. "President Trump did not want to cause that kind of unexpected disruption to the city and its people", Sanders said in a statement.

Trump and Macron discussed defence, trade and other issues when they met Saturday (local time) at the Elysee Palace.

It is starting a joint mission with the USA and an American frigate will escort it on the voyage, according the Elysee presidential palace. Later, he complained about wine tariffs between the two countries.

The US leader, who had already described the idea of an European Union army as "insulting", tweeted: "Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the US, China and Russian Federation".

Update III (8:35 am ET): Without directly referencing the rumors, Trump has branded reports that he refused to appear at a cemetery for American soldiers because he didn't want to get his hair wet as "fake news".

Before their meeting last weekend to celebrate Armistice day, the US President stated the over-reliance Europe has on the US and called for "fair" and "efficient" system with the bloc taking greater responsibility.

President Trump isn't ready to forgive the "French diss" served up over the weekend by President Emmanuel Macron.

In a speech undoubtedly aimed at Trump's brand of "America First" nationalism, Macron called nationalism a "betrayal of patriotism".

"It´s not for us to comment on content meant for his citizens", said the advisor, declining to be named. adding that relations between Macron and Trump were "not always easy but are enduring".
