Election Day to test Democratic resistance in Trump era

Kirsten Gillibrand and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Anxious Republicans privately expressed confidence in their narrow Senate majority but feared the House was slipping away. Most top races, however, are set in America's suburbs where more educated and affluent voters in both parties have soured on Trump's turbulent presidency, despite the strength of the national economy.

"It's all fragile. Everything I told you about, it can be undone and changed by the Democrats if they get in", Trump told supporters Monday during a telephone "town hall" organized by his re-election campaign.

Fact-checker sites state that Trump got 41 percent of the female vote in that election, though he did get 52 percent of votes from white women.

"Democratic voters are usually less likely to turn out", Ratcliff said.

Trump is stressing Senate contests like Indiana's after sending signals that maintaining the House may be out of reach.

Striking a dark tone at a rally in IN on Monday evening, Trump accused Democrats of "openly encouraging millions of illegal aliens to break our laws, violate our borders and overrun our country".

Despite not being on the ballot, Trump made the midterm elections about him.

While Trump is not on the ballot, the most polarizing United States president for decades has put himself at the center of every issue.

Republicans are bracing for a likely loss of seats in the House of Representatives but are favored to hold on to the Senate. Either of the latter two scenarios would be problematic for Trump, immediately putting a damper on his agenda.

Democrats have telegraphed they will open up investigations of his administration if they take over, and even try to force the release of his tax returns, something previous presidents did voluntarily for decades. Among those expected: Vice President Mike Pence and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal adviser to the president. But 23 is no sure thing: polls suggest their leads are narrow in numerous seats that could push them into the mid-20s or even the mid-30s. "I wouldn't say it's as important as '16, but it's right up there". We have long cautioned against assuming the House was a done deal for the Democrats, and we don't think readers should be stunned if things go haywire for Democrats tomorrow night. The writer, being a woman political journalist from India, now transplanted to the USA, is in a unique position to observe the three aspects that are critical to defining this presidency: chauvinism, gunslinger politics, and immigration.

Trump doesn't think much of that poll. "Which is a big difference", she said. Florida has the longest coastline in the U.S., but Florida's Republican candidate for governor, Mr Ron DeSantis, is a climate sceptic.

"When it comes to his actions, I'm not a huge fan of his tweets", Panelo said. Republicans hope he can help GOP Rep. Mia Love over the line in her toss-up race in the 4th District. "That's why our economy is growing like it is". This practice of manipulating constituency maps to gain political advantage was first practiced by MA governor Elbridge Gerry.

Trump himself has been campaigning non-stop in recent days, telling voters they must keep Democrats from taking back control of the House and Senate, or his agenda could be in jeopardy.

Should the Democrats win the house, any bills passed by the President would have to be approved by them - so they achieve more control in Congress.

Many people have already voted.

In other words, the GOP could actually expand their control over the Senate by quite a bit. This, though, is Republicans' best chance to flip a gubernatorial seat with Mike Dunleavy.

Former Clinton and Obama official Kenneth Baer said they "would have an internal battle at a scale not seen since after the 1988 defeat of Michael Dukakis", when Republican presidential candidate George H.W. Bush won 40 out of 50 states.

The demographic divides were coloring the political landscape in different ways.

President Trump and the Republican party owe their current dominance to this person.

Democrats faced a far more hard challenge in the Senate, where they were nearly exclusively on defense in rural states where Trump remains popular.

Of the 35 Senate seats that are facing polls, 26 were held by the Democrats.

Democrats boast record diversity on the ballot.

Three states could elect their first African-American governors, while several others were running LGBT candidates and Muslims.
